BYRD BAYLOR
"
Byrd Baylor has the
power to take you where she is, and to make you a part of
what she is part of."
"[Baylors] eloquent
lyric prose reflects a philosophy as special and loudly as
the lands she writes about. For her it is the
spirit&emdash;not the material things&emdash;
that is necessary for personal
development."
Byrd Baylor is a writer who lives in Arizona. Her books are
an inspiration to all of us, young and old. With a
beautifully poetic writing style she presents images of the
Southwest and an intense connection between the land and
people. Her prose illustrates vividly the value of
simplicity, the natural world, and the balance of life
within it. She stresses the necessity of viewing all
creatures as equally important, from the pack rats to the
hawks and coyotes, and recognizing the continual struggle
for survival of all living things.
Byrd Baylor is an excellent example
of a person who, through her creative narratives, has the
ability to touch each and every one of us and bring us
closer to the earth we share. Her ideas are teachable and
learnable in every sense, and applicable to all we practice
here at the outdoor school. Hopefully, the students who have
Byrd Baylor as their famous naturalist will carry her words,
her actions, and her absolute appreciation back with them
into their lives at home and beyond.
Byrd Baylor has written many books,
including The Other Way to Listen, The Way to Start a
Day, Your own Best Secret Place, The Table Where Rich People
Sit, Im In Charge Of Celebrations, Everybody Needs a
Rock, and Hawk, Im Your Brother.
